This is a lovely 19th century Go to Bed. It is turned from lignum vitae with very attractive figuring to the wood.
It is a good size measuring 8cm h x 4.5cm w.
A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. Note this one still has its striking paper to the base of the box.
