Superb Pair of George III Chairs Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster

18th century
Description

A good and rare pair of George III Gillows attributed mahogany elbow, desk or library chairs. The wonderfully shaped backs having carved shell and scroll decoration. The open arms having moulded detail and scrolling ends with carved shaped supports. The stuff over seats in need of re-upholstering and the chairs are raised on typical Gillows' style fluted front legs and outswept back legs. Dimensions:- Height…33.75’’/ 86cm. Width…22.75’’/ 58cm. Depth…23’’/ 58.5cm. Seat Height…19’’/ 48cm. Delivery to most of U.K. mainland £65.

OTHER NOTES:- Gillows of Lancaster and London were one of the great furniture and cabinet makers of the late 18th Century and 19th century. Founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow, the company remained in business until 1938 - albeit having merged with Waring of Liverpool in 1897. Gillows' designs were never worked up to a finished state or formally published. Instead they retained Estimate Sketch Books containing some 20,000 sketches used for the firm's private records or for customer's confidential perusal. The Gillows archive from 1731-1932 contains under 200 volumes of records. The company attracted commissions from a wide social spectrum: from tradesmen to the aristocracy and a wide range of products: from altarpieces and coffins to sideboards and chairs. Their furniture is collected and displayed in public collections and houses; dining chairs with a similar shell motif can be seen at Erdding, Wrexham: Kingston Lacy, Dorset; and Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
