17th Century Anglo Dutch School Portrait Of A Young Nobleman - Circle Of Cornelius Johnson

Period Portraits are proud to present this fine, large and sensitively rendered 17th century Anglo Dutch portrait of a gentleman of consequence pictured three quarter length in front of a stone pillar, dated 1634.
The sitter sports a black doublet with pronounced shoulder wings (just visible on the left). The fullness of the sleeves, and sense of overall width of the silhouette is consistent with the date of 1634.
Black was the most expensive dye and was therefore a highly fashionable colour worn – as an indicator of wealth, taste, and understated elegance by the European elites. This young gentleman wears a cloak over one shoulder and winds this around his body in a fashionable swaggering gesture, allowing his hand to appear and disappear into its folds, and emphasise his action and authority as he talks. Clearly his deportment is also an important social signifier
He accessorises his black doublet with contrasting white linen. Such linen could come in a variety of qualitie...s – up to 40 different degrees of fineness. His collar falls from the high-neck of his doublet but does not quite have the fullness associated with the falling ruff that was fashionable from c1625 onwards. Like the fashionable falling bands (flat collars) of the day it is trimmed with expensive lace. The design of the lace echoes needlelace and the exquisite reticella cutwork of earlier decades but it looks to have been created in a bobbin-lace technique fashionable in the 1630s.
The artist has picked up the texture of the textiles in great detail and really made the most of the play of white against black. The white cuffs of fine linen are trimmed with bobbin lace (which is sometimes also called bone lace or pillow lace after the tools that are necessary to create it – think Vermeer’s lacemaker).
To complete his outfit he carries a pair of fine leather gloves, that crumple in his hand. These may well have been scented, but such accessories also had a practical function for riding and outdoor wear. It would be expected that this sitter also owns a hat – probably of black felted wool – or if he is very wealthy – beaver fur. He has doffed his hat in deference to you – the viewer.
This fine work is presented in a excellent state of conservation and is ready too hand and enjoy in an antique gilt and black painted cassette frame.
