17th Century Anglo Dutch School Portrait Of A Young Nobleman - Circle Of Cornelius Johnson

Period Portraits are proud to present this fine, large and sensitively rendered 17th century Anglo Dutch portrait of a gentleman of consequence pictured three quarter length in front of a stone pillar, dated 1634.
 
The sitter sports a black doublet with pronounced shoulder wings (just visible on the left). The fullness of the sleeves, and sense of overall width of the silhouette is consistent with the date of 1634.
 
Black was the most expensive dye and was therefore a highly fashionable colour worn – as an indicator of wealth, taste, and understated elegance by the European elites. This young gentleman wears a cloak over one shoulder and winds this around his body in a fashionable swaggering gesture, allowing his hand to appear and disappear into its folds, and emphasise his action and authority as he talks. Clearly his deportment is also an important social signifier
