Large Oval French Silver Photograph Frame by Emile Langlois C.1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A very smart oval picture frame made from French silver bearing the Minerva silver guarantee mark in two places. The makers mark is also present for Emile Langlois of 67 rue Montorgueil, Paris. This mark was used between 1888 and 1924, I would expect this example to have been made c.1910.

The silver is guilloche or engine-turned decorated and mounted with a very regal coronet, I believe this one for a Baron or Baroness.

The rear is quite splendid with the all original leather covered backing and folding easel stand.

Excellent condition measuring 9 3/4" x 8 3/8" x 1" with a glazed aperture measuring 8 3/4" x 7 3/8".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century French silver frames typically feature refined metalwork, subtle geometric or guilloche engine-turned patterns, and understated classical motifs, reflecting the transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco aesthetics.

Silversmiths utilised solid sterling silver or silver plate over base metal, often employing engine-turning lathes to create precise textured patterns, paired with glass fronts and fabric easel backings such as silk or velvet.

Authentic pieces bear official French assay marks, such as the Minerva head stamp for silver purity, alongside maker marks registered with French assay offices, combined with period-accurate assembly features.

Position the frame on a console table, sideboard, or desk, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary objects or ceramic vases to balance historical metalwork within modern decor.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and clean silver surfaces using specialised silver polishes applied gently, avoiding harsh liquid dips that could seep into or damage fabric and wooden backings.
