Queen Anne Britannia Standard Silver Bleeding Bowl 1702

Description

A fantastic survivor! A solid silver bleeding bowl dating from the reign of Queen Anne.

The hallmarks on the side are remarkably clear, and they are for London 1702 with the maker's mark of John Cory. This is Britannia Standard silver, recognisable by the stamp of Britannia with her shield, rather than the lion passant of sterling silver. Britannia Standard silver has a higher purity (95.8%, as opposed to the 92.5% for sterling silver) and was introduced in 1696, just six years before the creation of this bleeding bowl.

It is in an amazing condition given its age. The cast handle carries partial hallmarks and is firmly attached to the body. The handle has initials (H*T).
