Tapestry in Oak Frame, 19th Century, Tidy Condition

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This tapestry, which is in a rather impressive 19th Century Frame, may be earlier. We have not removed the back of the frame to investigate.

It has some fade in the fabric colours but is an interesting subject, appears to depict earlier explorers looking out over a landscape.

The impressive oak frame is certainly 1800s and likely to be early to mid part of that century. It is in good condition with crisp carving.

Overall a rather appealing item in nice tidy condition at a very keen price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century framed tapestry is a decorative wall artwork featuring hand-stitched needlepoint or woolwork textile designs mounted inside a protective wood frame. Popular during the Victorian era, these pieces frequently depicted historical scenes, landscapes, or figurative subjects.

These pieces were typically worked using wool, silk, or cotton threads stitched onto canvas backing. The surrounding frames were commonly crafted from hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, often featuring carved detailing and protective glazing.

Authentic period examples display hand-stitched woolwork with slight natural fading to the dyes, period-correct framing construction such as hand-carved oak detailing, and historical backing materials including timber panels or antique nails.

A framed tapestry can be mounted above a mantelpiece or sideboard to create a focal point, or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall to add tactile texture and historical interest alongside contemporary artwork.

Position the framed textile away from direct sunlight to prevent UV damage and pigment fading. Dust the carved wood frame periodically with a soft, dry cloth and clean the glass using gentle glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth.
