A exceptional quality burr walnut 8 day longcase clock by the eminent maker Windmills & Elkins of London, circa 1730.
The 12-inch brass dial signed Windmills & Elkins London to the lower edge of the silvered chapter ring surrounded by mask and leaf spandrels, silvered seconds dial to the matted centre and calendar dial in the arch with star-cut centre and flanked by dolphin spandrels. Finely wrought and fretted blued steel hands.
The fully restored eight day bell striking movement with pivoted rack and anchor escapement, united by five knopped and ringed pillars.
The beautifully proportioned case with concave sided cresting and foliate fret panels, original carved flambeau finials above the canted hood corners applied with caryatid style foliate carvings, the break-arch trunk door with foliate carved corbels to the upper corners, the whole case veneered with well figured burr walnut of pleasing colour and patination.
The original lock and key to the hood and trunk door.
The original brass cased weights and brass strap brass bob pendulum.
Examples by the partnership of Windmills and Elkins are illustrated in J.A.Neale's book " Joseph and Thomas Windmills Antiquarian Horological Society 1999."
A similar clock by Windmills and Elkins was sold at Sotheby's London on the 14th December 2004 - Lot 139.
Standing 8ft 7" tall with the central finial and 8ft 2" without the finial.
