A set of six highly decorative hand coloured aquatints by Robert Frankland, published in London in 1811 by H. Humphrey, 27 St. James Street.
These aquatints are set in deep rosewood frames with Rowley Gallery labels verso, where they would have been framed and retailed in the early part of the 20th century (they started life in a book).
They also have old Christie’s auction stencils on the back from when they changed hands at some point.
They are titled as follows:
Going along a slapping pace
Topping a flight of rails ...
Charging an Ox-fence
Going in and out clever
Facing a Brook
Swishing at a rasper.
A classic of English sporting illustration and the inspiration for Alken''s Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders.
Condition:
Generally presentable but not perfect. No 3 has a spray of old worm holes down the middle and no 5 has some down the right margin. The veneer on the frames is quite fragile in places but has benefitted from localised repa
...irs and stabilisation.
Dimensions:
37 cm high x 47 cm wide x 4 cm deep
