Wright Barker was born in Horton near Bradford in 1864, to Benjamin Barker and Lydia Robinson, a family of weavers. He started off in the weaving industry after leaving school, but his talent lead him to pursue a career as an artist. By the late 1880’s/ early 1890’s he had moved to Edwinstowe, Notthingham and in 1891 made his debut at the Royal Academy, continuing to exhibit there until 1935. During his lifetime, he also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Nottingham Art Gallery and other provincial galleries.
Barker married Ellen Mary Alcock in 1892 and they had three daughters, one of whom was Kathleen Frances (1901-1969) who also became an artist. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1896 and by 1901 was living in Ollerton, Nottingham having achieved considerable financial success. In later life he also became a picture dealer. He died in Knaresborough on 10 March 1941. Barker specialised in animal portraits including dogs and horses, as well as hunting scenes and is known for his rich use of colour and bold strokes.
Examples of his works are held by the Cartright Hall Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, Kirklees Museum, Mansfield District Council, Mercer Gallery, Harrogate.
