An Exceptional 18th Century George II Walnut Lowboy of wonderful golden colour, in fine original condition. The superbly carved cabriole legs with foliate knee and scrolled ear pieces terminating in deeply carved claw and ball foot. The carving on the knee continues upwards onto the carcass, we have not seen this before on a Lowboy. It is similar to that seen on Giles Grendey chairs of the period. The drawer fronts and top are bordered with a fine checkered banding. To the edge of the top there is an additional small quadrant bead running above the more standard ogee shaped moulding. The handles with traces of the original gilding, are we believe original to the piece.
The two lower drawers at some stage have been fitted with locks, these have since been removed and the inside of the drawer fronts patched. We decided to remove the handles to discover more about the history of the piece, we could find no evidence of any another handle being fitted. The drawer linings are made in Oak, they are in clean original condition, as we like to see them.
It is a quite remarkable and rare piece of early English Walnut furniture.
