Handsome Antique Scottish Horn Snuff Box with Cut Cairngorm Stone C.1850

Description

A stunning circular Scottish snuff box made from horn with superb markings and highly decorative with the two tones of horn used. most unusually the base is made from glass with a bevelled edge.

The top is mounted with sterling silver which in turn is inset with a large cut Cairngorm stone.

CAIRNGORM is the brown variety of rock crystal, also called "smoky topaz." Cairngorm has a sentimental and historic interest involved in its use as an ornament for the weapons and picturesque clan dress of the Scottish High-landers.

An absolute stunner in wonderful condition measuring 2 5/8" in diameter x 1 1/4" tall to top of Cairngorm. Dating to c.1850.
