Unusual Art Deco Silver Pot Pourri After Ramsey Abbey Incense Boat

1920 - 1940
Description

A very pretty and fine navette shape pot pourri holder modelled as a close copy of the 14th century Mediaeval Ramsey Abbey incense boat, but with finely pierced and chased decoration to the cover of scrolling vines and flowers. One side is hinged with octagonal ball finial and the other side has a vacant cartouche amongst the decoration. The small handles are modelled as ram's heads. The body has a reeded frame and sits on an elaborate stepped and shaped pedestal foot. Hallmarked for London 1936, makers Carrington & Co.

It measures 19.5cm (7 5/8") long, 6.5cm (2 1/2") wide and 8.6cm (3 3/8") high. It weighs 196g / 6.3ozt.

Condition is excellent with no damage or repair. The hinged cover does not fit exactly flush to the body on one side but this is not a distortion of the cover. The body shape on this side finishes slightly lower than the other so it is impossible for the cover to fit perfectly; it is easiest to see this arrangement in the second and third to last photographs. There are two tiny pinpricks to the body and the whole piece has traces of gilding around the edges suggesting it was parcel gilt to the rims and frame as with the original incense boat.
