Antique Furniture Direct has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
The front is in a quarter sawn oak with mahogany inlay and cross banding and mahogany banding to the top. Dating from circa 1800.
The central motif is of Britannia, with shield and a lion at her feet. Her love of peace was indicated in the sprig of olive clasped in her left hand. This perhaps harked back to her ancient past, for it was Athena who, according to her myth, gave the first olive tree to her city of Athens. In modern times, Britannia remains the universally recognised personification of Britain.
Construction/Wood:
Oak with mahogany cross-banding and exotic wood inlay.
Condition Report:
Good condition. Very good colour and patina. Original pine interior. No lock. General wear and marks commensurate with age.
