Cowan Dobson (1894 – 1980)
Study of an Alsatian
Oil on canvas: 19 ¾ x 16 in. (50 x 40 cm.)
Framed dimensions: 25 ½ x 22 in. (64.8 x 55.8 cm.)

Painted circa 1950
> This dynamic and very vivid oil sketch of a patient Alsatian dog was painted by the celebrated Scottish society portraitist Cowan Dobson in the 1950s.
> Clearly painted from life, and at speed, this picture may have formed a part of a collection of other portraits – by Dobson - depicting other members of its owner’s family. The dog is brought to life with the artist’s carefully articulated facial details, especially in the dog’s eyes.
> I love the knowing stare of the dog; it focussing intensely on Dobson and now, in turn, us as viewers. The figure of the dog is framed with broad brushstrokes of strong reds and blues-greens, with some of the ground showing through. The artist was clearly satisfied with the sketch as he boldly signed the work at the bottom-left of the canvas.
> The painting survives in excellent condition and it’s ready to hang. 1st and 2nd photo taken in natural daylight, the 4th with a spot light - showing the slight variation in the colours' saturation.
> Shipping within the UK is included in the price. For all other destinations, please do get in touch and I will procure competitive shipping estimates for you.
