Andrew Geddes ARA (1783 - 1844)
"Mothers with their children" (double-sided)
Charcoal on paper: 9 x 6 1/4 in. (22.5 x 15.5 cm.)
Framed dimensions: 25 1/4 x 21 1/4 in. (64 x 54 cm.)
Drawn circa 1810
Inscribed on former mount: 'Andrew Geddes'
Newly mounted and housed in an antique decorative floral composition frame with plexiglass glazing.
> These compositional drawings by the famed Scottish artist and collector Andrew Geddes are rare examples of how he conceptualised his paintings. The drawings on each side of the paper both depict mothers with their children, more than likely inspired by traditional Italian Renaissance artists' subjects depicting the Virgin Mary with Christ Child and St John the Baptist. Both sides of the paper show tender moments between babies and their main guardians.
> Geddes was arguably the most accomplished etcher of his day, almost matching Rembrandt in his mastery of the medium. As a result his prints are fairly common on the market, which cannot be said of his drawings.
> This drawing is slightly torn and stained on the left side, but this is hidden by the current mount. Otherwise it survives in good condition for a drawing of its age. It is presented ready to hang.
> This comes from a collection of works by Andrew Geddes, including another drawing, a painting, and an etching, which I also have for sale do see my other listings!
