Cast bronze: 15 cm. height, 6cm. base diameter
Dateable to the early 19th century
> This small, refined bronze figurine is a typical ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir from Italy, made in large numbers to cater for the wealthy noble tourists, usually British aristocrats and sponsored artists, that frequented the Mediterranean from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s.
> The extant marble, from which this bronze figurine derives, survives at the Archaeological Museum in Naples. It is thought to have been made in 1st century BC Rome, and itself based on an earlier Greek bronze model from the Hellenistic period (c.300 BC).
> The figure of Venus (Aphrodite) is shown removing her long draped mantle to bare her nude body. The word ‘Kallipygos’ is a reference to the woman’s beautiful buttocks, as emphasised in the sculpture, which she appears to be inspecting.
> The present sculpture has several nicks, including above her rear, and scuffed in places, which is to be expected from a small bronze figure of its age. Otherwise this remains in lovely condition and would grace any connoisseur collector’s desktop.
