Of large size this fabulous antique inkwell is a stylish mix of patinated and gilded bronze centred around an extremely well modelled pair of jostling stallions. The sculptor has captured both the power and movement of the horses with one on the very verge of toppling over. The bowl sits on a circular stepped base and is mounted with three ormolu chimera monopodia interspersed with three acanthus leaf form mounts. The gilded interior houses the original removable glass inkwell.
The maximum overall height is 23cms and the external diameter of the bowl is some 14.3cms.
Although the gilding is fresh and bright and of the period the dark bronze elements have been later re-patinated. There is some rubbing to the patination especially around the rim of the bowl which may be due to the fact that the lid can be rotated 360 degrees whilst in-situ. The fixings to the underside of the base are replacements.
