Victorian inlaid rosewood jewellery box in fine condition. The box was a vanity box and featured various glass containers but in common with most boxes of the style the containers have either gone astray or possibly removed and sold separately. As it stands it would make an excellent jewellery box with the side drawer and open storage suitable for those larger items of jewellery and the smaller sections within the tray and the row of sections to the rear of the box suitable for those smaller items. The box boasts an unspoilt patina. One thin slither of replaced veneer to the bottom edge of the back, nicely done and given the extent and position does not detract from the box. Original inlaid oval Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon in excellent condition. Side drawer accessed by removing the original brass locking rod located to the box interior. Original velvet lining and dividers fully intact. The box lid closes perfectly square on the original hinges. Original lock. Key for decorative purposes though the lock mechanism has been tested and is working condition. The lid interior features the original velvet panel that folds forward to provide access to a ‘love letter’ envelope. The panel, swing clasp and envelope are in superb condition. The original removable tray is likewise in extremely good condition with the original dividers, and velvet lids and Mother of Pearl knobs. Again, no tears to the velvet. A nice item, a fine jewellery box or a nice project to source just 6 jars of a style and size that are very frequently available at auctions, antique fairs online antique sites etc to restore the item to former glory.
