Pair of mid C19th lacquered papier-mâché bedroom chairs in in the manner of Jennens and Bettridge.
The frames of twisted Solomonic column design inlaid and decorated with ‘mother of pearl’ shell inlay and gilded foliate and leaf designs.
The backs inset with oval ‘apple green ‘ painted panels with hand-painted flower arrangement designs. The top cresting rails of shaped and arched form also with painted flower-heads .
Highly decorative pair of bedroom or occasional chairs in excellent original condition.
* The Birmingham firm of Jennens & Bettridge took over the papier-mâché company of Henry Clay in 1816 and flourished in the C19th, opening showrooms and works in London . The company patented techniques employing the use of ‘mother of pearl’ shell inlay adding iridescent decorative properties to their papier-mâché wares , enjoying Royal patronage and international recognition for their production.
