~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~
Each piece is finely decorated, flowers, an exotic bird and a dragon fly. It is by Japy Frères and was retailed by the well known London clockmaker John Bennett. The Ormolu (finely gilded bronze) is in superb original condition.
The reverse of the porcelain is signed by the artist and numbered with the movement serial number (see the picture below). A mask of old father time is mounted to each side and to the top is an urn with rams head handles. The rear door is glazed with frosted glass. Please note that this type of clock does not have a front bezel. The clock sits on its gesso base.
The French movement is by Japy Frères and is of the makers usual high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click on the video to hear the bell and watch the clock running.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with slight any wear mainly to the rear and very slight discolouration in places. The porcelain is also in excellent condition with no damage and only slight wear to the over glaze gilt decoration. The gesso base has been recovered with fresh fabric. There is a repair to the left hand side of the base.
Japy Freres clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate along with the mark for the London retailer Sir John Bennett
Sir John Bennett (1814-1897) retailed this clock from his London premises at Cheapside. John Bennett was born in Greenwich in 1814, his Father John was watchmaker and he continued in this business, moving to Cheapside where he established his well known business. He was watchmaker to Queen Victoria and also clockmaker to the Royal Observatory, facts that were prominently displayed on his shop front at Cheapside and also in the advertising that the firm used to promote the business. The company manufactured clocks and also retailed clocks and imported from France. By the late 1920s the shop had been sold and the distinctive shop front moved to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
