An interesting framed 18th Century hand-sewn TAPESTRY depicting the Annunciation (*). Most 17th and 18th Century tapestries are of a religious nature – here the finely sewn and well detailed scene shows the Angel Gabriel informing the Virgin Mary that she she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus.

The Annunciation (literally ‘The Announcement’) is an important Christian feast held 9 months before Christmas (the ceremonial birthday of Jesus) and coinciding with the Northern Spring Equinox.

Dated: c.1720-40
