In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It was originally purchased by the Trout Sisters of Hallsands from a beach sale of the contents of a locally marooned ship. This chest would have likely been found in the captain's cabin and it would have been joined to another identical using the clips on the side. There are small holes in the top where a bed would have been placed over the top of the two chests.
It is a variation on campaign-style furniture with flush recessed brass handles and carrying handles on the side to enable it to be moved on and off of the ship.
It is in good condition for its age and displays well. The drawers are clean and tidy and open well. There are lots of signs of age and use and some old splits in the top but nothing untoward and they are strong and sturdy. They have been cleaned and gently polished and are ready for use.
