JULES ALFRED HERVE MATHE Oil on canvas ( 1868 – 1953 )

An oil on canvas by Jules Alfred Herve Mathe depicting figures picking flowers in the Valle Du L’Arve in the French Alps. The work is signed lower right & dated 1920. A super subject by this much sought after painter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Born 8 February 1868, in St-Calais; died 1953, in Paris.

Painter, pastellist, watercolourist. Portraits, scenes with figures, interiors with figures, fishing scenes, landscapes with figures, landscapes, urban landscapes, seascapes.

Hervé-Mathé studied with Jean-Paul Laurens, Benjamin-Constant, Baschet and A. Maignan. A member of the Salon des Artistes Français, he directed the school of applied arts in Le Mans for 30 years. He painted the groves in Normandy, the Breton coastline, and views of Paris and Le Mans with a well-balanced palette and according to the tastes of the academy. In 2001, he was included in the exhibition Painters and the Sarthe Region ( Les Peintres et la Sarthe) at the Musée de la Reine Bérengère, Le Mans (19th century section) and at the Abbaye de l’Épau (20th century section).
