This finely executed pair of twin handled patinated bronze vases are adorned with climbing roses and both are inscribed Aug..te (Auguste Moreau). They are raised on Rouge Griotte marble socles with a gilt bronze foot. They are some 37.7cms high, and the square element of the marble base is some 11cms x 11cms. The internal aperture of the opening of the vases measures approximately 5.6cms in diameter.
Auguste Louis Mathurin Moreau (b.1834, Dijon - d.1917, Malesherbes) was the third son of sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Moreau. Auguste initiated himself with sculpture along with his brother Mathurin and in 1861 made his debut at the Salon where he would exhibit regularly and abundantly until 1913. His subjects were primarily genre scenes, pastorals and allegories, his style realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau dynasty. The similitude of names sometimes provokes confusion in the attribution of certain works signed with first initials. [Pierre Kjellberg - Bronzes of the 19th Century - Dictionary of Sculptors].
This sculptor's non figurative work especially without the 'trademark' putti appears scarce.
The vases are in very good condition, the wear being consistent with their age. The bronze is rubbed, marked and discolured in places. There are some nibbles to the extremities of the marble and the gilding to the gilt bronze foot plate is rubbed.
