This well executed pair of patinated bronze lidded urns are after the highly revered French sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion (b.1738 Nancy - d.1814 Paris) who executed a number of similar designs, one of which, in marble, is in the Wallace Collection.
The main body of each urn is decorated in the round with different Bacchanalian scenes of frolicking putti and fauns beneath horned grotesque mask handles joined by draped swags. The urns are raised on acanthus covered bases (one of which is incised internally MF - as shown in the last photo) with berried laurel leaf rims fixed to a circular Belgian black marble socle. The lids are similarly decorated with panels of acanthus leaves interspersed with slender fillets of inverted harebells and topped with a pineapple form finial.
They are in very good condition with wear consistent with age having some rubbing to the patination and very minor nicks to the marble bases which also have an age related bloom to parts.
The overall height is some 52cms, the maximum width is some 22.3cms and maximum depth approximately 18cms.
