A superb oil on canvas landscape oil by one of the great British landscape artists David Cox Snr O.W.S (1783-1859). The painting shows a landscape of ripe wheat fields and figures on a road, there is a village in the distance with beautifully detailed windmills. The painting is as would be expected beautifully worked and composed with a huge expanse of sky emphasising the open flat landscape. The painting has been lined some time ago and had some minor restoration at that time, it has been professionally cleaned recently. The painting is framed in a vintage gilt frame that works well with the artwork. The work is signed and dated to the left of centre ‘David Cox 1849’ which is typical for the artist. Cox was the most famous landscape artist of the mid-19th century, with a national reputation for fresh, lively landscapes in watercolour and, later, in oil.
