Description
A beautiful landscape engraving depicting a shepherd with his flock in an idyllic rustic setting with fortifications and a town beyond. 1807. Engraved by Richard Earlom after a drawing by Claude le Lorraine. Richard Earlom (1743-1822) achieved fame with a series of fine copperplate engravings published in Georgian London by John Boydell. They were after drawings by Claude le Lorraine (1600-1682) that he produced for a publication called Liber Veritatis. The Liber Veritatis, meaning Book of Truth, was a book of drawings recording all of Claude’s completed works. A fine impression employing mezzotint to replicate the wash areas of Claud’s original and etching for the pen lines, printed in bistre on a hand made laid paper. Within an impressive period gilt gesso and wood decorated bollection frame. Publication details below image: Claude Lorraine delt. / Richd. Earlom sculp. / Pub.
