Attractive Antique Large Cast & Wrought Iron Fire Basket with Back

19th century
For Sale by Abacus Antiques
Description

A lovely cast and wrought iron fire basket. We date this set to the mid 19th century.

The basket is fitted with a removable serpentine front frieze and has a large cast iron fire back.

The back depicts a military soldier holding a spear, this is surrounded with an ornate foliate design.

The front legs have an ornate scroll design and are topped with large brass ball finials.

The legs are able to be unscrewed from the base of the basket for transport.

The fire basket and back has a total height of 42" (107cm), an overall front width of 50" (127cm) and an overall depth of 23” (59cm).

The actual fire back has a width of 20” (51cm) and the overall width at the rear of the basket including its legs is 30.5” (78cm).

This lovely fire basket and back remains in a good solid condition, commensurate with age and usage. This includes a little bit of oxidisation to the metalwork and a bit of wear to the brass finials.

This remains a stylish fire set. It will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire baskets emerged as freestanding hearth containers designed to raise solid fuel off the fireplace floor, enhancing airflow and combustion. The inclusion of a dense cast iron backplate protected the chimney brickwork from direct heat while radiating thermal energy back into the room.

Historical fire baskets were predominantly constructed using heavy cast iron for elements requiring high heat retention, such as backplates and base grates, combined with wrought iron for decorative scrollwork and brass for ornamental finials.

Authentic period pieces display irregular hand-forged joinery, surface texture variations from historic sand-casting processes, and genuine age-related surface oxidisation rather than uniform modern powder coatings.

Place the fire basket within an open masonry fireplace or brick alcove as a central focal point. It can be dressed with birch logs or LED lights to maintain a warm aesthetic when not in active use.

Remove accumulated ash regularly using a soft brush. Preserve the dark iron finish by applying traditional black grate polish with a cloth, and buff brass finials gently with specialized metal cleaner.
