Made of an Eastern hardwood with similarities to European walnut. This chest would have been made to be used by a merchant to transport his valuables around the Eastern trade routes.

It was made to be secure, but also survive the rigors of its transportation by mule, wagon, or ship and so it had iron straps to give extra strength.

The trunk is fascinating as it has decorative lock plate and iron straps and hasp to secure the lid.

The lid opens to reveal a large storage area as well as a lidded compartment for the small valuables the merchant would need to carry.

Looking at this you cannot fail to imagine the stories this could tell of its journeys around the lawless areas of the East and the escapades it undoubtedly went through.

These make wonderful talking pieces as well as of a good size to use as a coffee table.
