Rare Liverpool Porcelain John Pennington Leaf Tray Pickle Dish

£175    $234    €205
A rare John Pennington porcelain pickle dish formed as a leaf with stalk looped handle, c.1780. Standing on 3 conical feet, the shaped dish has moulded veins and coils around the edge, painted in underglaze blue around the edge and with a central oriental scene of a house with fenced garden and some cannonball style rocks in the water in front. This pattern can also be seen on the reverse of some John Pennington sauceboats decorated with the Large Exotic Bird pattern.

Reference: Liverpool Porcelain Of The Eighteenth Century by Watney, colour plate 31d for a similar example.

It measures 13cm (5 1/8'') wide by 12.7cm (5'') long and 3.8cm (1 1/2'') high.

Condition is very good: there is a small glaze frit to the rim to the right of the stalk and a shallow chip on the underside of the rim below the tip. No other damage or restoration. There is some crazing and discolouration, more obviously to the reverse and a short glaze level hairline on the underside; this does not come through to the front.
