Attractive Antique Georgian Mahogany Bow Front Hanging Corner Cabinet

18th century
For Sale by Abacus Antiques
Description

A lovely antique Georgian mahogany corner cabinet. We date this cabinet to the first half of the 19th century.

The cabinet consists of a pair of bow front side hinged doors. The right hand door is fitted with a lock (no key supplied, but one could easily be obtained if required).

The cabinet has 3 shelves the middle shelf has a shapely cut out. The insides of the cabinet is painted green.

The corner cabinet has a height of 42" (107cm), a front width of 27.5" (70cm) and a depth of 19.5" (50cm) from the rear back corner to the outer edge.

This lovely Georgian mahogany corner cabinet remains in good condition with some surface markings commensurate with age and usage. There is some wear around some of the door edges and there are some old repairs around the base. The cabinet is missing a small bit of dentil moulding from the top right of the cornice and also missing the internal hook for the left hand door, this does not affect the door from staying shut. The internal green paint also shows some wear.

This remains a very stylish and elegant Georgian mahogany corner cabinet which will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian bow front corner cabinet is a wall-mounted or standing cupboard designed to fit into a 90-degree corner, featuring a curved convex front and produced during the Georgian era in Great Britain.

These pieces were typically constructed using native or imported mahogany, often incorporating flame mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as oak or pine, alongside brass escutcheon plates and iron hinges.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-planed timber surfaces on back panels, original brass fittings, and natural wood contraction marks appropriate to late 18th- or early 19th-century construction.

A corner cabinet can be mounted in an underutilised dining room or hallway corner to introduce warm wood tones and vertical structure without occupying floor real estate.

Preserve the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying a beeswax polish annually, and positioning the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
