Damaged but beautiful!

This early nineteenth century face of what was once a complete storage-bag (chuval), was made by Teke tribes when they produced these fantastic madder-reds pre 1850. This was also the time the great Salor Turkmen produced their magnificent glowing reds.

In this magnificent piece, we see six Salor guls depicted on a beautiful red field - these guls highlighted with magenta silk in the centre - now partially corroded. The 'elem' or skirt is intricately patterned with small stylised trees which can also be seen in the top panel.

With some loss to each side and damage to the upper panel, this chuval still retains its incredible beauty - something to hang on the wall and admire. I think it speaks for itself!
