Description

George III inlaid kneehole

This George III inlaid kneehole was made circa 1800.

These kneeholes were originally used as dressing table by the upper classes, quite often the top drawer was fitted with sections for bottles and dressing accessories to be stored.

The slide could be used for a surface for different powders and scents while the owner prepared themselves for the day or evening.

As time went on these became so versatile, they were soon used in many other settings and now are predominately used in the downstairs settings of a home.

This eye-catching example has good wide satinwood banding around the top and chequer inlay around the drawers and kneehole cupboard.

The top with a lovely oval fan and the cupboard with an inlaid conch shell. The inlay drawing from the high fashion of the period from Thomas Sheraton designs.

The brushing slide with generous brass axe head pulls and the drawers with the original plate handles.

To each side of the kneehole cupboard are 3 graduated drawers and a further long drawer along the top.
