Rare White Marble Bas-relief Plaque Of Napoleon

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Cella

Very rare French 19th Century white marble bas-relief profile portrait plaque of the Emperor Napoleon in the manner of Alexis-Joseph Depaulis (1792-1867). Beautifully carved portrait of Napoleon as Emperor with classical victor''s laurel, similar to the official designs struck in bronze on commemorative medals throughout the Empire period. It should be noted that these medals have Napoleon facing the other way and none have the legend ''Napoleon 1er Empereur Des Franēais'' perhaps indicating this is post Empire period. Simple hanging hole for a nail in the wall to reverse. For a similar example of Louis Philippe see Christie''s New York sale 28th October 2003, Lot 123. French, second half of the 19th Century.
