In Deep Thought: The Lady in the Park, Circa 1910: Mysterious French Post Impressionist Oil on Canvas

1900 - 1920
Description

I love the mystery of the scene. There she is, seated on a park bench on a summer's day, demurely dressed in a gown that, from afar, looks black, but is in fact in shades of dark violet. Her hands are folded in her lap, she seems contemplative. Her hat is slightly tilted, fashionable, but we cannot make out her face. Is she expecting someone? What her story is, we will never know - but we will always wonder, and this makes the painting forever engaging.

An oil on canvas dating from circa 1910-15, the painting is unsigned, and we have no indication as to who the artist is. An antique work, the painting presents discreet stable craquelure, with marks from the central stretcher bars on the canvas. Measuring 55 x 38 cm, the artwork is presented in a luxurious frame by Delf, one of the top French frame makers. The overall framed size is 73 x 55 cm.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Post-Impressionism emerged in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an extension of Impressionism. Artists rejected the literal depiction of light and nature in favour of expressive colour, distinct gestural brushwork, geometric structure, and subjective emotional atmosphere.

Artists during this era typically painted with oil pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. The canvas was primed with gesso, supported by wooden stretcher frames, and occasionally finished with a protective varnish.

Authenticity is evaluated through visible age-appropriate surface craquelure, natural oxidation on the stretcher wood and canvas back, and period-correct pigments. Examination under ultraviolet light can also reveal historical restoration or original varnish layers.

Hang the artwork as a focal point above a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to create visual balance. Pairing a period painting with minimalist contemporary furniture highlights the rich texture and historic character of the canvas.

Display the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or canvas tension loss. Lightly dust the surface with a soft, dry brush, and consult a qualified conservator for professional cleaning.
