Large Georgian Mahogany Dining Table

18th century
Description

Large Georgian mahogany dining table

This Large Georgian mahogany dining table was made circa 1820 using the best mahogany available at the time.

It is made in 3 large sections each with its own pedestal base. The bases having superb turned columns with the 4 swept legs each coming from this and ending in fine cast brass toes with rolling castors under.

Imagine the pleasure this table will bring you, either when it is not in use or when you are entertaining your family and friends.

A Georgian mahogany dining table like this, would have been made for an important house and would have been a custom-made order, not one off the peg.

The solid mahogany top with grain and figuring that is full of life and colour. We have restored this table painstakingly by hand, after the many coats of polish has been applied, it is then finished with a good wax patina, by doing this by hand it gives the mahogany a depth of colour. Our images do not do this Georgian dining table justice. The upkeep is easy, just use a soft duster as you would any dining table

The dense mahogany timber used for this table, would have been transported by a large merchant sailing ship, across the Caribbean Sea, and then onwards across the Atlantic Ocean. The timber was stored in the depths of the ship and used as ballast, to keep the ship stable.

Once the sailing ship had battled across the oceans, and finally safely moored in Liverpool docks, it would have been unloaded by the dockworkers, before being transported overland on horse and wagon to the timber merchants. Here, the cabinet makers would have chosen the best dense mahogany timber to be used on this superb dining table.

Made circa 1820, a time when Robert Jenkinson (Lord Liverpool) was the Prime Minister, George IV had just ascended the throne, the Cato conspiracy to kill the Cabinet had been thwarted. HMS Beagle had been launched, which would later take Charles Darwin on his scientific voyage.

This dining table has survived and seen many of major world events including World Wars, mankind’s progress to flight and the new information age. Imagine the stories and wonderment the owners of this table engaged in when they conversed on all the current events over the centuries.
