Magnificent Uratube Suzani, 2.34m X 1.94m, Uzbekistan Circa 1850

19th century
Description

This beautiful suzani was embroidered in the city of Uratube in Uzbekistan. Uratube suzanis are known for their exuberant designs. This is no exception. Small fan-like leaves in shades of fuschia decorate both the field and the border in a kaleidoscope of colour. Note too a very lovely and unusual amber. Cherished through the generations, this piece has survived very well. Minor losses to the embroidery in the corners. Minor areas of re-embroidering. Generally very good condition. Relined

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered textile created in Central Asia, historically crafted by brides and their families as part of a dowry. Uratube suzanis are recognised for their dense, repeating floral or medallion motifs, typically rendered in vibrant silk threads across narrow strips of handwoven fabric stitched together.

Antique suzanis are constructed from narrow woven cotton or linen strips, embroidered with naturally dyed silk threads. Primary stitching techniques include the basma couching stitch and kanda-khayal, which generate tactile relief and detailed outlining across geometric and botanical designs.

Authentic mid-19th-century suzanis feature visible vertical seams joining individual panels, natural dye variations (abrash), and slight inconsistencies in thread tension or drawing. Modern reproductions often use synthetic dyes, uniform continuous cloth, or machine stitching.

An antique suzani can be mounted on a canvas or suspended from a batten to serve as a wall tapestry. It can also be folded at the foot of a bed or draped over upholstered furniture to introduce rich historic pattern and colour to a room.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight and away from high humidity to prevent silk fibre degradation and dye fading. Cleaning must be carried out by a professional conservator, and wall hanging requires even support across the top edge using padded mounts or hook-and-loop tape.
