A fine, sensitively rendered and highly decorative portrait of a handsome gentleman circa 1690 by an artist in the circle of Johann Kerseboom. The handsome green eyed young gentleman is pictured half length within the oval and with his head slightly inclined, he gazes at us directly and fixes us with the most sensitive of expressions.
He is also fashion conscious and leaves us in no doubt as to his status, as his richly coloured costume includes a stock tied at his neck and a shimmering emerald green silk mantle, lined in vivid pink. He also wears a full wig with exuberant curls which tumble around his shoulders.
Housed in its likely original carved and gilded frame with floral cartouches, this portrait exudes style, class and elegance.
Johann Kerseboom (died October 26, 1708). His date of birth is not known but Kerseboom was born in Solingen, the Rhineland Germany, and he likely joined his uncle, the German painter Fréderic Kerseboom (a.k.a. Frederick Casaubon), on his journey to England, ca. 1680. John Kerseboom quickly acquired a large portrait clientele and he worked from 1680 until 1708 in London and eventually set up his own practice where he specialized in portrait painting.
Some of the noted portraits that in the past were attributed to Frederick are now considered to be by him. A number of his portraits were engraved in mezzotint by engravers including John Smith. The artists patterns derive from Lely and Kneller, but his heads have recognisable individuality.
