American Glass and Silver Perfume Bottle

1900 - 1920
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is an early 20th Century American transparent blown glass perfume or scent bottle. It has a silver overlay with a mirrored finish to the stopper and the neck, and a geometric 'net' design to the body. I can't see any hallmarks but they may have been polished off.

Unfortunately the neck of the bottle has been broken and restored in a very obvious way.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silver overlay perfume bottle features a glass vessel coated with an electroplated layer of fine silver to create decorative patterns. Popularised during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this technique fused metallic designs onto clear or coloured glassware.

These vessels are constructed from blown glass combined with pure or sterling silver electroplated onto the surface. The matching stopper is typically composed of solid silver or glass capped with metal.

Authentic pieces usually feature purity stamps such as 999/1000 or Sterling along the metal edges, alongside visible signs of age including natural oxidisation and minor wear at contact points. The silver should form an integral layer bonded to the glass rather than painted detail.

Place the bottle on a dressing table tray, a bathroom shelf, or a bedside table to introduce a geometric metallic element. Combining it with glass vases of varying heights creates a refined curio display.

Dust the item using a dry, soft cloth and polish silver sections lightly with a specialized non-abrasive polishing cloth. Avoid submersion in liquid or harsh chemical agents to prevent loosening the silver bonding.
