Portrait Of A Lady C.1750; Circle Of Franēois Hubert Drouais (1727-1775)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
This exquisite painting abounds with ingenious flourishes and demonstrations of the painter''s skill and is a fine representation of female beauty. Great attention is paid to her luxurious apparel, which is striking in its portrayal of the sumptuous fabrics and their decorative richness. The bright colours are softened by the autumnal hues in a superbly effective harmony that brings out the dignity and beauty of the model. The hand grasping the rose is a virtuosic handling of paint and is utterly beautiful.
The graceful pose, sumptuous costume, rich colours, and brilliant technique are distinctive features of this portrait and it was a type that was in great demand during the 18th century, as it is today.
Presented in an antique frame.
Franēois-Hubert Drouais (Paris 1727-1775) belonged to a dynasty of French painters that included his father, Hubert Drouais (1699-1767), and his son, Jean Germain (1763-1788). He established himself as one of the leading portrait painters o...f the age of Louis XV having mastered the rules governing portrait painting in the ultra-refined society of mid-eighteenth-century Paris and Versailles. By the late 1750s he had become the chief rival of Jean- Marc Nattier (1685-1766), eventually he succeed as portraitist to the royal family, Louis XV''s last two official mistresses, and members of the nobility and the high-ranking bourgeoisie. It became very fashionable in the Paris of the late 1750s and the 1760s to have one''s portrait painted by Franēois-Hubert Drouais.
