~ French - Circa 1880 ~
~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~
A beautiful antique French clock by Japy Freres, the case by P. H. Mourey and the clock retailed by Henri Marc of Paris. It is a celebration of the arts. It features finely modelled figure of Euterpe, the flute playing Muse. It is made in gilt metal mounted with exquisitely decorated Sèvres style panels with a delicate Rose Pompadour ground. The long panel depicts two beautifully painted cherubs and the round one is a portrait of the goddess.
The dial is also porcelain, finely painted with a floral swag. It is complete with its original gilded hands and is signed for Henri Marc. Please note that this design of clock does not have a glazed bezel or a rear door.
The French movement is by Japy Freres and is of the maker's usual high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video to hear the bell and watch the clock running.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight wear, discolouration and tarnish. The rear of the case has been repaired in the past but does not detract. The porcelain is in excellent condition with no damage and only very slight wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration.
Japy Freres clockmaker's mark and Henry Marc retailer's mark on the movement backplate
P. H. Mourey case maker's mark on the rear of the case
Henry Marc retailer's signature on the dial
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
