Oversized Edwardian Threaded Glass & Sterling Silver Match Striker

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A magnificent oversized English match striker wither a sterling silver mount and well fully hallmarked for London 1914 (slightly rubbed).

Its an impressive and rarely found size measuring approximately 5" in diameter x 4 1/2" tall. I have filled it with matches just shy of 3 3/4" long (these cannot be shipped with the piece).

The silver is fully hallmarked but rubbed as most of these are, struck at the Birmingham assay office, I believe the letter is g for 1906, made by the well renowned silversmith, John Grinsell & Co.

Excellent condition with minor rough spots commensurate with age. A magnificent specimen!

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A match striker, historically known as a pyrogene, is a tabletop vessel designed to hold matches while providing a textured exterior surface to ignite strike-anywhere friction matches. These items became popular functional desk and table accessories in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Antique match strikers are commonly constructed from heavy glass, ribbed porcelain, or stoneware paired with metal mounts. High-end Edwardian examples frequently feature heavy lead glass with ribbed or threaded wheel-cut surfaces topped by sterling silver rims.

Authentic Edwardian pieces feature British hallmarks stamped into the silver mount indicating the silver purity, city assay mark, makers mark, and date letter from between 1901 and 1910. The glass body usually shows subtle signs of wear or strike marks on the ribbed ridges.

A glass match striker serves as a decorative tabletop object when placed on a mantelpiece beside modern candles, arranged on a coffee table tray, or styled on a gentlemans library desk.

Clean the silver rim gently using a specialised silver polishing cloth to avoid applying polish directly to the glass. Wash the interior glass reservoir carefully with warm soapy water without submerging the silver collar join.
