Description

A fine, and vibrant Roman School still life of pomegranates, grapes, figs and other fruits, set within a landscape. This richly coloured oil on canvas was painted in the early 18th century by an artist in the circle of Maximlian Pfeiler, and it depicts the abundant fruits of nature piled upon a rocky outcrop.
This fine work is remarkleable both for its delicious details and also its excellent state of conservation. A tiny lizard perches upon a ledge and in the background clouds flit across, a still vibrant, sky.

Maximilian Pfeiler (1656 - 1746)
Born in 1656 Pfeiler was a northern painter who was active in Rome between the 17th and 18th Century. He was a pupil of Christian Berentz and was a renowned still life specialist. He collaborated with Francesco Trevisani and Michele Rocca.
Pfeiler then became successful enough in his own right to carve out a leading role in the lively Roman artistic scene of the early decades of the eighteenth century. He is mentioned by the biographer Lione Pascoli, who described him as the most talented of Christian Berentz’s pupils.
This work is In an excellent state of conservation and it is ready to hang and enjoy in a later antique carved and gilded frame.
