A ‘reeve’ is the female of a medium-sized wading bird (similar to a sandpiper) called a ruff. During the mating season, the ruff displays a breeding plumage that includes a large collar of ornamental feathers ~ hence its name. Mainly breeding in Eurasia, particularly Scandinavia (a few are occasionally found in lowland areas of Eastern England), they migrate to warmer climates of India and Africa during winter months.
