Description
An English early 18th century walnut bureau bookcase / cabinet, of good colour and patination throughout. George I period, ca 1725. The top section with a bold swan-neck pediment centred by a brass finial. The mirrored door - above two candle slides - opens to reveal a fitted interior of drawers and shelving. The bureau base with a fitted interior, a concealed well beneath a slide, revealing secret drawers, over two short and two long drawers. The whole veneered and feather banded in well-figured walnut. Brasses are period, but not original. Mirror plate and brass finial are historical replacements. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA illustrates an early Georgian antique bureau cabinet of similar form in his 'Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) p. 78, illustr. 19, V & A Museum, London.
