William was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1851 and died in 1931. He also lived and worked in Ilkley, Scarborough and Harrogate.
He travelled widely and was inspired by the landscape of North Wales and the North East, particularly Yorkshire. He painted local views in Yorkshire, particularly Bolton Woods and Lakeland scenes. Many of his paintings also featured well-known views such as Bolton Abbey and scenes featuring rivers such as the Wharfe and Nidd or the majestic lakes of Grasmere and Ullswater.
His landscapes are easily recognised; and are generally scenes in summer or early autumn. His paintings are detailed with delicately rendered trees and foliage bathed in sunlight. His work shows rich colours and atmospheric lighting giving excellent perspective.
William Mellor paintings are highly sought after by collectors today.
His father, Joseph Mellor was also a landscape painter. He received much of artistic education in his father’s studio. His son, Everett Watson Mellor (1878-1965) was also an artist who followed his father in subject and style.
He did not exhibit in London, but his works frequently appear on the market. He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery and the Manchester City Art Gallery.
Baron Fine Art gallery provide a very diverse range of high quality 19th - 21st Century Oil Paintings, Watercolours, Etchings and Sculptures.
