Description

A fine quality George III flame mahogany 8 day longcase clock by Richard Chater of London.
Richard Chater, Working 1774 - 1811, Cornhill, London.
The high quality Egyptian influence style case veneered in beautifully figured flame mahogany, constructed on a solid oak carcass. The lancet arch hood surmounted by a stepped pedestal surmounted with the original finely cast bronze Egyptian sphinx, below triple fluted ebonised corners terminating with brass capitals. The convex circular glass, bound with a cast brass bezel. The hood sides with rectangular fretted cast brass and red silk lined sound frets. The lancet topped long trunk door with choice curled mahogany veneers, flanked by canted corners with finely cast brass Eygptian capitals and raised ebony moulded decoration beneath. The raised panel to the base with London style double plinth.
The stylish well proportioned case is in excellent original condition with wonderful colour and patination.
The convex circular white enamelled dial with roman numeral chapter ring, signed to the centre Rich Chater, 14 Cornhill, London.
The high quality movement of eight day duration, shaped and shouldered plates united by five knopped pillars, anchor escapement, pin crutch and striking the hours on a single bell.
A high quality movement beautifully executed by a good London maker.
The movement is fully restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.
Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 35 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the 1977 Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.
The original brass cased weights and heavy brass bob pendulum with steel strap.
Fine quality delicate blued steel hands of spade design.
