This extremely rare chest of drawers is of a most unusual design for this period. It is veneered in fiddle-back padauk which has a wonderful satin-like figured grain. This veneer would have been a highly prized timber to work with. This small Batchelor''s chest was designed to be dual purpose. Having three graduated lower oak lined drawers and a false top one, above this false drawer is a pull out writing slide which is inlaid with a finely tooled leather, and to facilitate ease of use a drawer has been fitted into each side of the chest for storage when writing this produces a large working area. The right-hand side is fitted for pens and an ink bottle. The brass handles, escutcheons and locks are all original. The chest stands on shaped bracket feet.
