ON THE RIVER FROME NEAR HOLMEBRIDGE DORSET - OIL ON ARTIST’S BOARD CIRCA 1960 ORIGINAL LABELS ON THE BACK - JAMES FRY 1911-1985 Signed by the artist with monogram. - Framed size 23.5 x 19.5 inchs 60 x 50 cms Painting size 18 x 14 inchs 45 x 35 cms - James Fry is a master of atmospheric light and reflection best known for his Dorset landscapes and coastal views. ‘Fry was called “the last of the English Impressionists” because of his fascination with the play of sunshine and reflections on water." (Taken from - Dictionary of Artists In Britain Since 1945.) - James Fry was an artist, designer and photographer born in London. After Art School he worked for the Picture Post and as a designer of ties for Liberty. In 1954 disenchanted with commercial life in London he moved to Corfe Castle in Dorset where he set up a studio. - Fry and his wife Ivy were committed pacifists, environmentalists and vegetarians, shunning cars, telephones, television and other aspects of modern life. He travelled by bicycle to find his subjects in the landscape and coastal scenery of Dorset. - The Dorset Museum holds several of his paintings and thousands of his photographic slides. In 1999 the museum included him in the published series Dorset Worthies. - The painting is in very good clean condition. It is presented in a new bespoke wooden frame. - Internal Ref: 91859
