FAQs

A chrystoleum, also known as a chromo-photograph, is a process developed in the late 19th century where a photographic print is pasted face-down onto the concave side of a glass plate. The paper backing is rubbed thin and made translucent using wax or oil, allowing oil colours to be applied by hand from behind to create depth and realistic tonal variance.

Chrystoleums were constructed using curved glass convex plates, albumen photographic prints, starch pastes, transparent waxes or varnish, and oil paints applied behind the glass matrix.

Authentic period chrystoleums feature convex glass panels, visual depth created by multi-layered hand-colouring behind the glass, slight natural yellowing of the binder, and original period framing elements such as gilt beaded inner borders.

An antique chrystoleum functions well as part of a gallery wall, mounted above a hall console, or positioned within a traditional library setting alongside period accessories and polished dark wood furniture.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking of the paint backing. Clean the outer front glass gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid glass cleaners.
